Bitcoin Slips Under $80,000 in Thin Weekend Liquidity

GCC Brokers Research · 2026年10月24日 · 阅读约 5 分钟

A Saturday leverage unwind, two days of spot ETF outflows and a crude-led inflation repricing dragged BTCUSD to its weakest level in over a month.

Bitcoin Slips Under $80,000 in Thin Weekend Liquidity

Bitcoin traded below the $80,000 handle during Saturday's session, its weakest level in more than a month, with the move landing in the thinnest liquidity window of the week. The driver cited across desks was a Middle East risk premium — but the more useful framing for traders is what it says about how crypto is currently correlated. Bitcoin did not behave like a hedge this weekend. It behaved like the highest-beta expression of a risk-off impulse that had already been building in equities and rates since Thursday.

On our pricing, BTCUSD closed the prior session at 81,238.91, down 0.36%, inside a seven-day range of 80,467.20 – 84,791.37. The weekend print pierced the lower edge of that band intraday before stabilising. Crypto longs accounted for $404 million of $436 million in total liquidations in a four-hour window on Saturday, and ether liquidations of $137 million came within $22 million of bitcoin's — despite ETH's market capitalisation being less than a fifth of BTC's. That asymmetry is the tell: this was a positioning event concentrated in leveraged altcoin and ether books, not a broad spot distribution.

Why Bitcoin Isn't Trading as a Safe Haven Right Now

The safe-haven thesis for bitcoin assumes it is uncorrelated to equity duration. For most of October it has been the opposite. Bitcoin fell 3.4% over a 24-hour window into Friday to around $81,387, pulling the broader crypto complex down roughly 3%, as the Nasdaq Composite closed 2.6% lower and the S&P 500 shed 1.21%. When the equity leg sells off on growth and capex concerns, crypto has consistently traded as the high-beta tail of that same factor.

Gold made the point from the other direction. Bullion extended a steep weekly decline and broke below $4,000, with the move framed around higher energy prices feeding rate expectations rather than around risk aversion. When the traditional haven and the digital one both fall on the same session, the market is repricing discount rates, not fleeing to cover. That is the correlation regime traders should assume is in force until it demonstrably breaks.

The Flow Picture: ETFs Stopped Absorbing

The structural bid that has cushioned prior drawdowns was absent into this one. US spot bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of roughly $635.5 million on 22 October — the largest single-day redemption since June — led by IBIT at $254.1 million and FBTC at $217.5 million. A second consecutive day of spot ETF outflows followed on Friday.

This matters mechanically. Passive ETF creations have functioned as a price-insensitive absorber of spot supply through 2026. When creations flip to redemptions into a weekend — when market-maker inventory is thinnest and the authorised participant channel is closed — the order book has to clear the imbalance alone. Depth thins, spreads widen, and a given notional of forced selling moves price further than it would on a Tuesday afternoon. Saturday's gap lower is a textbook illustration rather than an anomaly.

Derivatives positioning was not extreme going in, which argues against reading this as a full capitulation. Open interest fell 1.00% to $53.58 billion while funding stayed positive at 0.0068% per eight hours — well below the 0.03% threshold typically associated with overleveraged conditions. Sentiment gauges sat at 42, inside neutral territory.

The Energy–Inflation Channel Doing the Real Work

Strip out the headline and the transmission mechanism is a rates story. With Gulf supply and Hormuz transit risk embedded in the crude curve, Brent traded above $117 a barrel on Friday — its highest in more than four years — while WTI climbed above $103. Year-ahead consumer inflation expectations rose to 4.7% from 4.6% and longer-term expectations to 3.5% from 3.4%, both the highest readings since May.

That combination is what crypto is actually discounting. Market pricing has carried roughly a 78% probability of a December Fed hike into the FOMC meeting and subsequent PCE data. Higher expected policy rates raise the discount rate on every long-duration, zero-cashflow asset — and bitcoin sits at the far end of that spectrum. The energy move is not bullish for crypto via an inflation-hedge argument; in the current regime it is bearish via the real-yield channel.

We would separate the two cleanly when sizing: the geopolitical clause explains the timing of the move, the rates repricing explains its direction and persistence.

Levels and the Calendar Into Midweek

Technically, the zone that failed is the round-number area that had held as the base of the seven-day range. Traders are watching whether the weekly close reclaims the lower boundary of that prior consolidation — a reclaim would mark the break as a liquidity artefact of weekend conditions; repeated rejections below it would confirm the range has shifted lower. The first meaningful supply shelf sits around the mid-range congestion from earlier in the week, well below the seven-day high.

The near-term calendar is light on crypto-specific catalysts but dense on the macro inputs that have been setting the tone. Monday 26 October brings the Chicago Fed National Activity Index at 15:30 GMT+3 and the Dallas Fed Manufacturing Index at 17:30 GMT+3, with the German Ifo Business Climate at 12:00 GMT+3 (forecast 89.8 vs 89.9 prior). Tuesday 27 October is heavier: US Durable Goods Orders at 15:30 GMT+3 (forecast 0.6% vs 0% prior), CB Consumer Confidence at 17:00 GMT+3 (forecast 80.5 vs 81.9 prior), and an ECB President Lagarde speech at 20:00 GMT+3. The Communist Party Fifth Plenum runs from 03:00 GMT+3 on both 26 and 27 October, relevant mainly through the China growth and commodity-demand channel.

For clients trading BTCUSD and ETHUSD through the Sunday reopen, the practical point is execution conditions rather than direction. Weekend and early-session liquidity is structurally thinner; spreads widen and slippage — in both directions — becomes more probable. Our crypto CFDs run on the same automated STP model as the rest of the book: positions hedged with liquidity providers, no requotes, no filtering by profitability, and symmetric slippage applied. Position sizing, not order type, is the variable that does the work in conditions like these.

Looking Ahead

Two things could extend the move: a further session of spot ETF redemptions confirming that the passive bid has turned, and any reinforcement of the higher-for-longer pricing from this week's US data or the Fed meeting that follows it. Two could reverse it: a stabilisation in the crude curve that unwinds the inflation-expectations impulse, and a Monday liquidity restoration that shows the weekend break was mechanical rather than informational. Until one of those resolves, we would treat the correlation to equity duration — not to geopolitics — as the variable that explains the tape.
